Study the Composers

If you are planning to study the famous composers throughout the year, here are some resources you might find of interest.  Also, I've tried to list the composers' birthdays for each month in the Get it Together section of the website and books for those ocmposers will be highlighted in their particular birth month.  Here are my additional finds:

Famous Composer Notebooking Pages from Homeschool e-store. Offered for $4.50 this e-book offers 96 pages, 4 notebooking payouts for each of 24 composers.

CD58746: Gallery of Classics--9 CDs

Gallery of Classics--9 CDs from Christian Book Distributors

If there's a classical music hit parade, this is it! Liszt, Grieg, Haydn, Tchaikovsky, Brahms, Schubert, Rossini, Schumann, and Ravel are all performed by world-class orchestras and top soloists. Nine CDs.

[CBD Members will pay less than $1 per CD to get a sampling of each of the above composer's works.  Individual  Music CDs  of famous composers' works are also available from Chrisitan Book Distributors for similarly low prices.  I purchased several to supplement our music studies. ]

480102: Lives of the Musicians Lives of the Musicians
By Kathleen Krull / Harcourt Brace

It's no secret that Beethoven went deaf, that Mozart had constant money problems, and that Gilbert and Sullivan wrote musicals. But what were these people - and other famous musicians - really like? What did they eat? What did they wear? How did they spend their time? What were they like as children? What were their phobias, obsessions, and bad habits? And what did their neighbors think of it all?

Here are the fascinating and often humorous stories of twenty famous musicians - people of all shapes, sizes, temperaments, and lifestyles, from various countries and historical periods, beginning with Vivaldi and ending with Woody Guthrie. Accompanied by brilliant caricatures, Lives of the Musicians will appeal to those who love music, to those who like to hear the story behind a famous name, and to just about everyone else.

[I picked up a copy of this title at a used book store during our summer vacation and consider it to be quite a treasure.  My own children are still too young to reap the full benefit of this book, but I look forward to studying it with them in the future.  This author has written similar titles on a variety of other topics, including American folk songs, the Presidents, and famous Artists. ]

This book is also available from Amazon.com:  Lives of the Musicians: Good Times, Bad Times (and What the Neighbors Thought)

Used copies of this book start as low as $1.75 at half.com- Click here

Find biographies of several composers written for children by Ann Rachlin at half.com as well. Click here

I was able to pick up several of these books in a set on ebay.

Just search for books by "Ann Rachlin"
