Get Ready for Groundhog Day

Friday, February 2nd is Groundhog Day.  Be sure to check out the book selections for February for some cute stories about how this day got its start.  Here are some websites that will help you get ready to learn and teach about this day.

Groundhog Day e-books:

A to Z Teacher Stuff  - Download a printable book or a cut and paste art pattern from the A to Z Teacher Stuff Store.

HomeSchool e-store History of American Holidays - several holidays are feature in this affordable e-book.

Mom's Picks:

The Official Punxsutawney Groundhog Club - Wow, that's not the easiest name to spell! This is a lighthearted site with some useful materials for you.   See a video of Phil's 2006 prediction (caution, this requires a download).  Find out about the schedule of events for 2007, read funny facts about Phil on the FAQ page. View lesson plans for teachers and educational activities for kids.  Get a recipe for groundhog  cookies or read a groundhog poem.

Enchanted Learning - Always a favorite site of mine, EL has crafts, worksheets and more for Groundhog Day.  If you want to find it all in one place, this is the place.

Education World - This site has lots of border ads, but also lots of useful information and ideas for Groundhog Day.  Print a worksheet that makes use of the Office Groundhog Day Festivities Map to answer questions.  Use the Groundhog Day Predictions Table in another exercise. Teacher's masters and answer keys are provided.  Plus, the site provides a list of other useful links.

Kindergarten Treehouse - This site offers lesson ideas, recipes, groundhog poems, craft ideas and a list of links to find even more resources.  The site uses advertising links and graphics similar to what you've found on this website.

Other Resources:

Kids' Domain - This site does have a few pop-ups and other ads, but it also provides a list of useful links to information and activities for Groudhog Day.  Linked activities include coloring pages, a maze, a wordsearch and crafts.  There are also links to quizzes, an animated story and e-cards.  Caution- you will be directed to third party sites to access the activities and other features.

Project Groundhog  - It appears that there is no project groundhog this year, but you can still view data from 2006.  See how children all over the world reported the weather on Groundhog Day and used it to rate Phil's performance.

Kids' Turn Centeral - Make your own prediction and see how last year's prediction turned out.  Also learn about Punxsutawney Phil and Canada's Wiarton's Willie.  Also access a coloring page, word search, a tic tac toe game and visit Groundhog Day Online.  At Groundhog Day Online you can send an e-greeting, look at pictures of groundhogs and more via a list of links to other sites.  This website does have border ads.
