February Calendar and Resources

This area of the site is still under construction, but I wanted to share what I'd found so far for those of you who are getting an early start. Please check back later to see what else I've added.

February is a busy month, it's Black History Month, Groundhog Day is the 2nd, Valentine's Day the 14th, and Presidents' Day the 19th. The Chinese New Year also takes place on the 18th and Ash Wednesday is the 21st.

Get a free printable February calendar from Teacher Created Resources with interesting facts for every day of the month (like the ones below). Simply click on the "Free Lessons and Activities" link. The Teacher Created Resources calendar for February provided me with the following dates:

In science, February 11th is Inventor's Day and the 21st is the day Samuel Morse demonstrated the telegraph in 1838. Charles Lingdbergh's birthday is the 4th of February and John Glenn was the first U.S. astronaut to orbit the earth on February 20th of 1962. Pluto was discovered on February 18, 1930. The 5th is Weather Forecaster's Day and the 9th was the day upon which the National Weather Service was established in 1870. If you started studying snow in January, now might be a good time to introduce other weather topics.

In Language Arts, February is the birth month of Laura Ingalls Wilder, Jules Verne, Wilheim Carl Grimm, and John Steinbeck.

February Social Studies related dates include the first meeting of the Supreme Court on February 1, 1790. The ratification of the 25th Amendment, President Abraham Lincoln's birthday, Susan B. Anthony's birthday, President's Day, and George Washinton's birthday. On February 23, 1945 the U.S. flag was raised over Iwo Jima. Grand Canyon National Park was also established in February of 1919. February also saw the start of the San Francisco Gold Rush in 1849. King Tut's burial chamber was opened in February of 1923.

Artists' birthdays in February include Norman Rockwell's on the 3rd and Pierre Renoir's on the 25th. February is also the birthday of Frederic Chopin.
